Tips on Hanging Artwork
-
Hang pictures at eye level --about 5˝ feet
from the floor.
-
Exception: Always relate your artwork to
the furniture it is grouped with. A painting should be about 6-9
inches above your sofa, chair, or table. One of the most common
errors is to hang it too high, stranding it out in “la-la-land.”
-
Your artwork should be at least half as
wide but not wider than the piece of furniture below it. You don’t
want one to overpower the other.
-
When hanging artwork on a papered wall,
cut a small “V” in the paper, lift the “V”, and hammer in the nail
beneath it. Later, if you move your artwork, just glue the flap of
paper back down. Viola--no hole to see!!
-
When
hanging a group of pictures, find a unifying theme that makes your
grouping of artwork consistent (e.g., a group of landscapes or a
collection of watercolors).
-
Arrangements should hang closely together to create a strong
visual effect. Place larger pictures about a palm’s width apart;
separate smaller ones about the width of the mat.
- DO NOT hang mirrors
above the fireplace mantle. When you are sitting down in the room,
all you will see is the reflection of your light fixture or ceiling
fan. Wouldn’t you rather see a beautiful piece of artwork?
