Fall Decorating Projects with Color

Decorating with Fall Colors

Where should you begin your fall decorating projects?

Begin with color. Painting your rooms in beautiful shades is a simple, low-cost way to update your home for the season.

Start by working with your favorite colors. If you’re looking for inspiration, take a peak outdoors and choose shades of buttery yellow or orange inspired reds. Full-bodied reds look wonderful in a family room while cheery yellows will brighten a dark entry or add instant sunshine to a kitchen. More and more paint companies are offering small sample sizes so you can try out a myriad of color choices. Paint a swatch directly on your walls and live with the color so you can see how it will look morning till dusk.

Go ahead and blanket your walls in bold saturated hues. A vibrant shade on one wall will add life to the room and can focus attention to a favorite feature. Every space in your home can benefit from a dose of color.

Don’t forget your ceilings. Ceilings are usually treated in a lighter shade than the walls, but you do have options. Choose a color that will compliment, contrast or match your wall color, but take it down a shade or two. Mix 1/3 color to 2/3 white for a pulled-together look.

Play with color combinations and pair rich earth tones with warm neutrals. Brown is the new black. Rich, robust browns can be paired with blue, (robins egg to midnight) orange (sienna to pumpkin) or red (cinnamon to bubblegum) to rev up a room. Make bold colors pop by painting trim in brilliant white. Add character to a room by painting moldings or cabinetry in a different shade. Add splashes of color to the back of bookcases and cupboards, the insides of cabinets or a powder room ceiling. Neutrals are always a classic choice. If you’re not ready to commit to an entire room full of color, add small dashes of color to your rooms with decorative pillows and accessories. Simply start all over again when you’re ready to make a change.
