Creative Solutions for Redecorating a Small Guest Room
I recently had the opportunity to work with a client/friend on redecorating a small guest room. With her children growing up and leaving home she decided that it was time to convert one of the kid’s rooms into an inviting retreat for guests.
This was a very fun project because we decided to start from scratch and really had no limitations (except a budget
). Because the budget was the driving force, we had a few challenges to overcome.
1st challenge: What color to paint?
Solution: Instead of trying to decide the wall color first, I encouraged my client that we should go shopping and find the bedding that she loved and then make the color decisions later. It is much easier to choose a paint color to match a fabric than to pick fabric to match a paint color.
2nd challenge: What do we do with the shelf that lined the main wall close to the ceiling? The homeowner had a shelf installed in her child’s room many years ago and was concerned that trying to take it down might make for a difficult wall repair. Solution: We painted it! By painting the shelf the same color as the wall it caused it to “disappear” visually.

3rd challenge: How will we afford a headboard?
Solution: Turn a decorative room screen into a headboard! While shopping we came across this beautiful wood and wrought iron room screen for about $125. It was just the perfect width for the queen sized bed we moved into the room. We simply attached it to the wall using a couple screws and the result was beautiful!
